Coffee from the Brazilian mountains of Paranaíba
The coffee we are pleased to present to you comes from the Brazilian region of Paranaíba, south-central Brazil. The name comes from the town at the source of the Paranaíba River, which flows along the slopes of the Serra da Mata da Corda from west to southwest, covering a distance of nearly 1,000 kilometers and forming the Parana River with its tributaries. Alto Paranaíba is the mountainous area of the Paranaíba region hence the coffee is sometimes referred to as Paranaíba mountain coffee (Serras Do Alto Paranaíba).
Alto Paranaíba is the highest part of the Cerrado region in the state of Minas Gerais. The plantations are spread out at elevations ranging from about 900 to 1,050 meters above sea level and grow Arabica coffee of the Mundo Novo variety, Red Catuai . Cerrado is one of the youngest coffee-growing regions in Brazil, with a history that begins only 40 years ago, while coffee cultivation in the rest of the country is even more than 150 years old.
The name of the town was also taken from the name of the Rio Paranaíba community, founded by miners searching for diamonds in the river around 1760. After the first houses were built, settlers appeared, coming from the Sao Paulo area, from where they fled the frost waves regularly destroying the crops. This led to the establishment of a settlement that transformed from an ad hoc camp of diamond prospectors into a typically rural community living off agricultural crops. At the end of the 20th century, farmers came to the region seeking optimal conditions for coffee cultivation. This created the last and one of the youngest coffee-growing regions in Brazil.
Brazil Alto Paranaíba coffee is 100% arabica, which comes from selected 15 of the best coffee plantations of the Alto Paranaíba region. The crop owners have joined forces to support the restoration of the Amazon rainforest, which is being destroyed by repeated fires. Each farmer who sells a container of coffee from his crop contributes $5,300 to the Apuí Emergency Fund of the Institute for the Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Amazon, (IDESAM).
