Monsoon Robusta coffee from India.
This is the first monsoon robusta to be featured in our coffee shop. So far we have only had Indian monsoon-treated Arabica in our offerings.
The word Malabar in the coffee's name comes from the name of the southwestern coastline of southern India. Geographically it encompasses the wettest region of India's Western Ghats mountains. The process of processing coffee, called monsoon, came about by accident. At one time, cargoes of green Indian coffee sailed to Europe for over 6 months; taking the route around Africa by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa). During the journey they were exposed to the wet sea wind. Coffee in those days, was stored in wooden crates, under the wooden decks of ships.
Due to this long exposure to moisture and wind, specific flavor characteristics developed in the coffee. The color of the coffee bean turned from light green to yellow. Almost immediately after its arrival in Europe, the coffee gained incredible popularity and found its way into many coffee shops on the old continent.
Nowadays, in a controlled and planned manner, coffee undergoes a monsooning process locally in India. When the rainy season begins in Karnataka, in June just 1-2 months after the harvest, the coffee is dumped onto special platforms and subjected to the wind and rain. Every few days, the coffee is turned over and stirred so that the monsooning process is even. After selection, the coffee is bagged and exported to Europe. Currently, it takes only a month to ship to Europe.
India Robusta Monsooned Malabar AA is a Canephora variety, from the Karnataka region. It grows at an altitude of 850 meters above sea level. Monsooned Robusta AA is a Robusta berry that has undergone the same processing through monsooning as India Arabica Monsooned AA.
The taste of India Robusta Monsooned Malabar coffee is characterized by delicate fruity, spicy notes with a touch of pepper. The coffee contains twice as much caffeine as arabica coffees.
