History of coffee in Tanzania

The history of coffee in Tanzania is relatively short and dates back to the early 20th century, when German colonizers began growing coffee in the Kilimanjaro region and Cameroon. Tanzania's coffee sector began to develop in the 1950s, when the Tanzanian government set its sights on developing the industry. In the 1960s and 1970s, the government implemented reforms that allowed small producers to grow coffee on their land. This in turn contributed to the development of the coffee sector in Tanzania. During this time, many farmers' cooperatives were formed to grow coffee and promote their products on the international market. Today, coffee is one of Tanzania's main export products, and the country's coffee-growing regions include Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Mbeya, Moshi, and Ruvuma. Arabica coffee is primarily grown in Tanzania, and popular varieties include Bourbon, Kent, and N39. Tanzanian coffee is characterized by sweet flavor, acidity and citrus notes.
