History of coffee in Uganda
The history of coffee in Uganda dates back to the 19th century, when coffee was first imported from Zanzibar. However, despite the presence of coffee plantations, coffee production and trade in Uganda were small until the 1920s, when the colonial government began to actively support the development of coffee plantations. In the 1950s and 1960s, Uganda's coffee production peaked and coffee became one of the country's main export products. Unfortunately, coffee production declined in the 1970s and 1980s due to the economic crisis and lack of investment in agriculture. Since the 1990s, the Ugandan government has refocused on improving coffee farmers and coffee production in the country, with positive results. Ugandan coffee is increasingly popular in international markets, and the government and non-profit organizations are investing in training and development for local coffee farmers.
