Africa Arabica and Robusta: The Roots of Coffee
As we begin to explore the world, through the prism of coffee flavors in different regions, it's worth starting our journey from Africa the place where the two most known varieties, coffee arabica and coffee robusta, originate. By exploring coffee, we immerse ourselves in the roots of coffee culture.
Historians of coffee popularization note that robusta cultivation dominated in French colonies while arabica coffee cultivation was a specialty of British colonies. By exploring the diversity of coffee, we have the opportunity to understand these historical differences.
Africa Coffee: History and Impact of Coffee Plantations
The first recorded, intentional coffee cultivation dates back almost 2000 thousand years. Legend has it that a man discovered arabica coffee as a wild-growing plant in the territories of today's Ethiopia, thus Ethiopia became the legendary homeland of coffee and the continent the home of coffee. What is coffee for the region? It is the second-largest coffee-producing continent in the world. Coffee plantations together occupy over 31 million km2. For comparison, the area of Poland is 312 679 km2. Coffee cultivation is practiced by 25 countries, and nearly 10 million households live from coffee cultivation. Most coffee lovers primarily know the region from coffee originating from Ethiopia and Uganda. Ethiopia is the largest producer of coffee, accounting for 39% of coffee production on this continent, Uganda, holding the 2nd position, accounts for 23%, other countries include Ivory Coast 13%, Tanzania 6%, Kenya 5%, Madagascar 3% and Cameroon 3%.
Specialty Sochaccy Coffee in its Purest Form
Although both Africa coffee arabica and coffee robusta come from the region and we call both plants coffee, they are very different plants. Robusta is a resilient coffee variety, which grows very well at lower altitudes and in a wider range of climatic conditions. Arabica is a more demanding and sensitive variety, which grows well at higher altitudes and preferably on volcanic soil. Generally, robusta coffee is easier to grow, yields more, and is cheaper to process than arabica coffee. Robusta beans contain twice as much caffeine and antioxidants than robusta beans, hence the higher resistance of this plant to various diseases. Despite all these advantages, coffee prepared only from robusta beans is inferior in taste, dominated by bitterness, herbal and earthy notes, while arabica contains significantly more diverse flavors. Each of our coffees offers a unique taste experience, immersing you in the rich cultural tradition of this continent.
