It is commonly believed that coffee was brought to Asia by Baba Budan, but he didn't do it officially because he stole coffee plants during his pilgrimage to Mecca around 1600 and then smuggled them to India. However, the real development of coffee cultivation in Asia owes much to the Dutch and dates back to 1699 when Dutch settlers successfully planted the first coffee plants outside the Arabian Peninsula. The place where this was done was the island of Java, and this is how much of the world still calls coffee - Java. In 1706 the first harvest of coffee from what is now Indonesia was sent to Amsterdam, the harvest was sent along with a batch of seedlings and it was the seedlings from Java that gave rise to the great coffee crop in America, in Martinique.
Asian coffees, characterized by their full round flavor, dense exotic dark chocolate, strong nuts and hints of subtle earthiness.
