Coffee in Congo is an excellent example, of the positive effects of concentrating efforts on specialty coffee cultivation. In the very crucible of African conflicts, an amazing specialty coffee growing project has emerged. A project based on exploiting the potential of the Congolese border areas of Virunga National Park for nature-compatible, high quality arabica coffee cultivation.
Virunga National Park is the oldest national park in Africa, founded back in 1925 by the King of the Belgians and originally named Albert Park in his honor. After Congo's independence in 1979, the park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Virunga is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth. It is home to the largest number of mammal, bird and reptile species than any other protected place on earth. The park abounds with breathtaking views. The park is also a famous reserve for gorillas, which are one of the symbols of Virunga. The park is home to an active volcano (Nyiragonga), Mount Rwenzori ( 5,109 meters above sea level). The work of the park's rangers, is brilliantly shown in the film; an award-winning film including one with an Oscar nomination, titled "Virunga" available on Netflix.
Congo Virunga coffee offered in the Sochaccy. co coffee shop is a project that combines the strengths of Virunga National Park and Farm Africa, is just over 10 years old, a period that was enough for Congo Virunga Kasundi coffees to instantly gain a worldwide reputation. The slopes of Mount Rwenzori, the highlands northwest of Lake Edwarda, are the growing fields of some of the world's finest arabica coffees. Coffee grows in a temperate climate; full of abundant rainfall and plenty of sunshine. The volcanic soil of Mount Rwenzori, full of nutritious minerals, provides the coffee bushes with the full range of nutrients necessary for vegetation. Crops reaching over 2,000 meters above sea level guarantee that you will encounter the taste of excellent African coffee. Congo Virunga Kasundi coffee, comes from the small plots of 359 individual farmers, the total crop covers 168.86 hectares and is located between 6 volcanic peaks. The fields are sown with 100% arabica coffee of the Bourbon variety and are located at altitudes ranging from 2,017 to 2,039 meters above sea level. The coffee is certified as UTZ organic coffee. After harvesting from the bushes, the coffees were subjected to a process of removing the top part of the berry using the fully washed method, and then the coffee was dried in the sun.
The coffee has notes of sweet honey, black currants, and spices. The coffee especially works well in espresso.
How does the level of coffee roasting affect the taste of the coffee?
The level of roasting of coffee has a significant impact on its flavor and aroma. Light roasted beans retain most of their natural acids and fruity notes, giving them freshness and clarity. Medium roasting allows sweeter flavor notes, such as chocolate and caramel, to develop, creating a more balanced and full-bodied taste. The darkest roasted beans are characterized by intense, deep flavors, dominated by notes of dark chocolate. Our Sochaccy Artisan Coffee Roaster stands out in the market by being the only one to offer a choice of bean roast levels, allowing customers to perfectly customize the taste of their coffee to suit their preferences.
