Peru Diamante Verde Freshly Roasted Arabica Grain Coffee

Peru is a country steeped in history, home to remarkable tourist attractions such as Machu Picchu and Kuelap. The country's name probably comes from the word "Birú," which was the name of a local ruler. The most recognizable person from Peru is Mario Vargas Llosa, a Nobel Prize winner in literature. An interesting connection between the tourist attractions and coffee is that coffee is grown in the regions where these wonders are located, and is gaining worldwide recognition.

Coffee cultivation came to Peru in the 18th century, thanks to missionaries who planted the first sapling in the Chanchamayo region. Coffee quickly gained popularity among the country's population, and its cultivation became one of the main sources of income. Coffee-growing regions such as Cajamarca, San Martín and Pasco are important in Peru, and coffee is grown at altitudes ranging from 1,100 to 2,000 meters above sea level. Arabica varieties such as Typica, Bourbon and Caturra are mainly grown. The farms and coffee plantations are diverse, but usually small and family-run.

      Coffee's region of origin

Peru Diamante Verde Arabicaproducescoffee from the San Martin region. Near the plantation where this coffee is grown is the Cordillera Azul Reserve (about 100 km from the plantation). This reserve is home to many endemic plant and animal species, making it one of the most biodiverse places in the world.

Farmers in the San Martin region care about the environment, using organic farming methods, which translates into quality coffee. Volcanic soils, rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium and phosphorus, are conducive to coffee cultivation. The plantation where the coffee comes from belongs to Odilo Vallejos Tapia, who has been growing coffee for 10 years. The plantation is a member of the farmers' cooperative Diamante Verde Farmers' Union, which has been in operation since 2017.

The plantation's coffee crops are located at an altitude of 1,100 - 2,000 meters above sea level and are planted with arabica coffee varieties such as Pache, Caturra, Bourbon and Typica. The plantation is certified as European organic and Fair Trade coffee.

What does coffee from Peru taste like?

Peru Diamante Verde coffee is characterized by intense aromas of tropical fruits, such as pineapple and mango, as well as nut and chocolate notes. The flavor also features a mild acidity, reminiscent of citrus, which gives the coffee a refreshing character. The taste is complemented by a pleasant, velvety texture, which makes the coffee from Peru extremely balanced and expressive.

Depending on how the coffee is prepared, different flavor notes can be brought out. Preparing the coffee cold will reveal more pronounced fruit notes, while brewing the coffee hot will draw out deeper flavors of chocolate and nuts.

What's the best way to make coffee from Peru?

Peru Diamante Verde coffee can be made in a number of ways, but here are some recommended methods:

      • Aeropress: This method brings out the rich flavor of the coffee and produces a full, velvety body to the brew.
      • For best results, use freshly ground coffee, water at 91-95°C and extraction for about 2 minutes.
      • Chemex: With a paper filter, Chemex allows you to get a clean, clear taste of coffee .
      • The water should be heated to 92-96°C, and the brewing time should be about 4 minutes.
      • This method brings out distinct fruit notes and acidity.
      • Kalita Wave: This method allows you to control the rate at which the water flows through the coffee, allowing you to get the full spectrum of flavors and aromas. It
      • is recommended to use water at a temperature of 93-96°C and an extraction time of about 3-4 minutes.
      • Espresso: If you prefer coffee with an intense flavor, you can try making Peru Diamante Verde coffee as espresso, in a pressure machine .
      • Depending on your preference, you can experiment with the extraction time (about 25-30 seconds) and the amount of coffee (8-10g).

Regardless of the method you choose, the key to great-tasting coffee is the freshness of both the beans and the water, as well as precision in brewing. This will allow you to enjoy the exceptional taste of Peru Diamante Verde coffee.

You should also remember to store your coffee in an airtight container, away from light, moisture and high temperatures. This will keep your coffee fresh for a longer period of time, which will positively affect its taste and aroma.

      Certifications and environmental aspects

Coffee from Peru often comes with certifications such as Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance or Organic. This means that it is grown sustainably, taking care of the environment and the well-being of the workers on the plantations. Coffee crops in Peru are usually grown in an agroforestry-compliant manner, meaning they are integrated with different tree species, helping to preserve biodiversity.
