Congo Daily Coffee: Freshly Roasted Coffee from the Heart of Africa.
The Heritage of the Virunga Region
Congo Daily, a washed arabica, is a coffee that transports us to the heart of the African wilderness - the Virunga National Park in the Kivu region. This region, located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, borders Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. It is here, on the slopes of the majestic Lake Kivu, that many small farmers grow coffee with an unusually rich flavor profile. Although the region is known for its constant conflicts, thanks to cooperation between coffee farmers, NGOs and the Virunga National Park, the cultivation of specialty coffee has become a symbol of peace and economic recovery.
History and Impact: the Virunga Alliance Initiative
Virunga National Park, established in 1925, is the oldest national park in Africa. Two active volcanoes, Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira, have significantly influenced the diversity and richness of the park's flora and fauna. More than 3,000 species have been recorded in its territory, of which more than 300 are endemic. The park is home to endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, as well as savannah elephants, chimpanzees, lions, leopards and antelopes. Thanks to its unique ecosystem, the park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Unfortunately, due to the unstable political situation in DR Congo, the park is also on the list of endangered World Heritage sites.
As of 2019, we are supporting an agricultural project together with Farm Africa and the Virunga Alliance. This program aimed to improve the living conditions of coffee farming families living on the border of Virunga National Park. Over the four years of the project, until December 2022, 5500 farmers received training in good agricultural practices. Under the program, funded by the European Union, farmers received 143,000 coffee seedlings and training in their planting and care.
The Production Process: From Bush to Cup Congo Daily
Congo Daily coffee comes from plantations grown by 320 small farmers affiliated with two cooperatives - Coopade and Kawa Kanzururu. The coffee grows at an altitude of 1953 meters above sea level, which provides a unique microclimate conducive to the production of high-quality beans. The region's volcanic soil, rich in minerals, provides the plants with essential nutrients. Coffee is harvested twice a year: from September to December and from March to June (known as the fly crop).
After harvesting, the coffee beans are carefully processed using the "fully washed" method and dried in the sun, which preserves the full flavors and aromas. State-of-the-art washing stations, investments in infrastructure, such as new grinders, and employee training ensure the highest quality of the final product. Congo Daily coffee has gained worldwide recognition for its unique flavor profile.
Flavor Profile: Unforgettable Experiences
Congo Daily coffee features a rich flavor profile with notes of walnut, bergamot and milk chocolate. The addition of spices gives the coffee a spicy touch, creating a harmonious whole. This coffee is particularly well suited to espresso, where its complex flavor and aroma can fully develop.
History and People: Working Together for a Better Future
The Virunga Alliance project from which Congo Daily coffee comes is about more than just growing coffee. It's a story of collaboration between different organizations and communities working toward a common goal - creating a sustainable future for the region. Through their joint efforts, local farmers have not only been given the tools and knowledge needed to grow quality coffee, but also the support to build stable farming communities.
Over the past years, the project has brought many benefits to local farmers and their families, improving their living conditions and providing a source of income. Despite the many challenges, the Virunga Alliance project shows how the power of cooperation and determination can contribute to positive change.
