Uganda, Coffee and the Nile River: A Hike Through History and Aroma
Imagine yourself as a European explorer in 19th century Africa, with the mission to "Find the source of the Nile" at the top of your list of discoveries. A fascination with this river, rooted in the oldest records of history, combined with a love of accurate measurement inherited from the Greeks and Egyptians, fueled a zeal to solve the mystery of its true length.
Seekers of the source of the Nile have made numerous discoveries, from remote mountains to breathtaking waterfalls. Dr. David Livingstone, the hero of a famous but probably apocryphal anecdote, discovered and named the Victoria Falls while searching for the source of the Nile, being mistaken by only 2,000 miles.
Although the location of the source of the Nile is still up for debate, it is widely recognized as Lake Victoria, albeit inaccurately. After a short trip through Lake Kyoga, the waters flowing ambiguously out of Lake Victoria change direction westward to merge with the Albert Nile. Further on, already as the Victoria Nile, it transforms into the White Nile, which travels 1,400 miles to Khartoum, Sudan, where it merges with the Blue Nile and continues to the Mediterranean.
Traveling past Murchison Falls, you enter the West Nile, where forests thicken on the border with the Congo. West Nile, home to the Alur people, is notable for its pristine terrain despite thousands of years of habitation.
The Alur people of Uganda: Tradition, Coffee and Connection to the Land
The Alur people, living in harmony with nature, remain faithful to traditions, celebrating life through dancing, birth of twins, or enthronement of chiefs. These rituals, full of symbolism and faith in the forces of nature, reflect the community's deep connection to the earth.
Harvest celebrations represent not only a time of gratitude for the harvest, but also a moment of knowledge transfer between generations and motivation to work together for prosperity.
In 2015, the Nebbi White Nile Mill was established in the highlands of northwestern Uganda, supporting 6,000 farmers in the region. The transition to a 'fully washed' method and quality-focused training has significantly improved the quality of Uganda's coffee.
Processing Coffee in Uganda: Striving for Excellence
With a focus on sustainability and quality, a state-of-the-art mill was built in Nebbi. Through a comprehensive approach, from agronomic training to investment in infrastructure and support for community initiatives, the mill has become a center for local community development.
Processes such as wastewater management, use of coffee husks as a heat source, water recycling, and renewable energy are just some of the innovations introduced at the mill. Grown on nutrient-rich volcanic soils, White Nile coffee offers a unique flavor profile, a testament to Uganda's drive to produce the highest quality coffee.
Through all these efforts, Uganda is not only raising the standards of coffee quality, but also strengthening the community, ensuring sustainability and a better tomorrow for farmers and their families.
