Nicaragua at Sochaccy
Coffee from Nicaragua is a true masterpiece of agricultural art that has survived numerous challenges to offer the highest quality beans today. At Sochaccy Artisan Coffee Roastery, we present exceptional coffees from The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes, which are the result of years of tradition and passion of local growers.
History and Tradition
Coffee has deep roots in The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes, where it has been grown since 1850. In just twenty years, it became the country's largest export commodity, a trend that continued for another hundred years. Today, Nicaragua is recognized worldwide as one of the leading sources of coffee, ranking as the 11th largest coffee producer in the world. Coffee is crucial to the country's economy, providing about half of all agricultural jobs and contributing more than 20% of the agricultural GDP.
Overcoming Challenges
The history of coffee production in The Republic has been marked by many challenges, from natural disasters to political unrest. Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and repeated droughts had a devastating impact on coffee production. The global coffee price crisis, which drove prices below the cost of production, further exacerbated the situation. Nevertheless, thanks to the determination of growers and the support of cooperatives, Nicaragua's coffee sector has managed to recover.
The Role of Cooperatives
The cooperatives have played a key role in the revival of coffee production in Republic. With the support of the Sandinista government in the 1980s, land was given to cooperatives, which redistributed it to farm workers. These cooperatives gained access to financing, education, machinery and technical support over time, allowing them to implement sustainable farming practices and improve the quality of life for the growers.
Growing and Harvesting Nicaragua
Coffee in The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes is grown mainly in five regions in the northwest of the country, where unique microclimates and diverse terrain favor the production of high-quality beans. The Land of Lakes and Volcanoes specializes in the production of Arabica coffee, which is grown under the shade of trees, helping to protect the environment and improve coffee quality.
Modern Production and Consumption
There are currently more than 43,000 farms in this country, and coffee remains a major source of income for many local communities. Many of these farms are small, family-owned farms that produce coffee with exceptional flavor and aroma. Nicaragua is increasingly focusing on organic coffee production, which is highly regarded in international markets.
