Today, Nicaragua is recognized worldwide as one of the leading sources of coffee, ranking as the 11th largest coffee producer in the world. Coffee is crucial to the country's economy, providing about half of all agricultural jobs and contributing more than 20% of the agricultural GDP.

Overcoming Challenges

The history of coffee production in The Republic has been marked by many challenges, from natural disasters to political unrest. Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and repeated droughts had a devastating impact on coffee production. The global coffee price crisis, which drove prices below the cost of production, further exacerbated the situation. Nevertheless, thanks to the determination of growers and the support of cooperatives, Nicaragua's coffee sector has managed to recover.

The Role of Cooperatives

The cooperatives have played a key role in the revival of coffee production in Republic. With the support of the Sandinista government in the 1980s, land was given to cooperatives, which redistributed it to farm workers.
