History of Coffee in Asia

The origins of coffee can be traced back to the late 17th century, when, according to legend, an Indian pilgrim to Mecca - Baba Budan - smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen to this asian state in 1670, even though at the time it was forbidden to export coffee seeds from Arabia. The beans were planted in the hills of Chandragiri in Karnataka. The Dutch, who dominated much of India in the 17th century, helped spread coffee cultivation in the country. However, it was not until the arrival of the British Raj in the mid-19th century that commercial coffee cultivation fully flourished. Arabica was initially the dominant variety, but huge infestations of coffee leaf rust prompted many farms to switch to Robusta or Arabica/Liberica hybrids.

TheIndia Coffee Board was founded in 1907 to improve the quality and presence of India's coffee through various research and educational activities. Throughout the country's modern history, the board has strictly regulated the coffee sector, especially between 1942 and 1995. After liberalization in 1995, producers were granted full freedom to sell their products wherever they wished.

Coffee production in India is 70 to 99 percent on small farms of less than 10 hectares. The vast majority of coffee is still produced in traditional growing regions in the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which account for about 90 percent of the country's production. The remainder is grown in the recently developed Andhra Pradesh and Orissa areas of the Eastern Ghats, and in the northeastern "Seven Sisters" states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

Coffee from India is usually grown under a two-tiered canopy of evergreen leguminous trees, often co-cultivated with spices and fruits such as pepper, cardamom, vanilla, oranges and bananas. Most Arabica farms are located between 700 and 1,200 meters above sea level. Coffees can be processed by both natural and washed methods, known locally as "Cherry" and "Parchment." The coffee is usually dried in courtyards, tables or, in the case of larger estates, in mechanical dryers.
