History of coffee in Peru
Coffee came to Peru in the 18th century, most likely from Jamaica. The first coffee bushes were planted by missionaries in what is now the Chanchamayo region. The coffee that was grown belonged to the Coffea arabica species.
In Peru, coffee crops are located between 1,200 and 2,200 meters above sea level, which can be compared with the height of the peak of Babia Gora in Poland (1,725 meters above sea level. Babia Gora - a mountain massif in the Babia Gora Range belonging to the Żywiec Beskids in the Western Beskids). Cultivation altitude affects the taste of coffee, as the higher the bushes grow, the slower the fruit ripens, resulting in a more refined flavor. In Peru, coffee is grown mainly in three regions: Chanchamayo, Cajamarca and Puno. Coffee from Chanchamayo is known for its mild acidity and sweet taste, with notes of chocolate and fruit. In Cajamarca, we can taste coffee with a balanced flavor with notes of caramel and nuts. In contrast, coffee from Puno is characterized by pronounced acidity and tropical fruit flavors. The Chanchamayo region is the most highly regarded, due to its ideal conditions for growing coffee. Peru mainly uses the wet method of processing the beans, which translates into cleaner, milder coffee flavors. Arabica coffee is the most popular here, and the quality of coffee from Peru is steadily improving, as evidenced by numerous certifications such as Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance.
Coffee culture in Peru
Peruvians appreciate freshly roasted coffee, which they drink mainly in espresso or americano form. The most popular recipe for Peruvian-style coffee is "Pasado," which is coffee brewed with a base of concentrated coffee syrup. An interesting history associated with coffee from Peru is that coffee beans were used as a form of payment. A little-known curiosity is that some coffee crops in Peru are so high up that the beans are transported down are on the backs of donkeys.
