Malawi

Established in 1891 as the British protectorate of Nias Malawi is an area that gained independence as the state of Malawi in 1964. Malawi, being a landlocked country, borders Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. Its most distinctive geographical feature is Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa, with a length of about 580 kilometers, which beautifully spans almost the entire length of this green country.

The origins of coffee cultivation in Malawi date back to the early 1930s, during colonial rule. Coffee production reached its peak, with 7,700 tons of green beans, but began to decline over time due to low prices. Many estates decided to replace coffee crops with macadamia trees or tea plantations. In general, coffee was grown on estates on a limited basis. Today, the country's coffee production is about 1,500 million tons, almost 27% of which comes from small producers.

The potential to increase production of existing crops, such as coffee, is significant because land is available. It is estimated that nearly 10,000 hectares of land are available for coffee cultivation in Malawi. With significant investment in the sector, coffee production could easily increase to 30,000 tons, generating annual revenues of $100 million to $180 million.

The lowest point in Malawi is where the Shire River joins the international border with Mozambique before it joins the great Zambezi River, at an altitude of just 37 meters above sea level. The country's highest point is at just over 3,000 meters above sea level at Sapitwa on Mount Mlanje.

Malawi's capital, Lilongwe, is located in the center of the country, but until 1975, Zomba, located on the edge of the plateau, was known as "the most beautiful capital of the Commonwealth."

Malawi's economy is based mainly on agriculture, with about 90% of the population living in rural areas. In 2001, agriculture accounted for nearly 40% of the country's GDP and 88% of export earnings.

It is interesting to note that the Arabica now grown in Uganda has its roots in Malawi and is still recognized as such.
