Coffee and its history

The history of coffee in Tanzania is relatively short and dates back to the early 20th century, when German colonizers began cultivating coffee in the Kilimanjaro region. Tanzania's coffee sector began to develop in the 1950s, when the Tanzanian government set its sights on developing the industry.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the government implemented reforms that allowed small producers to grow coffee on their land. This in turn contributed to the development of the coffee sector in Tanzania. During this time, a number of agricultural cooperatives were formed to grow coffee and promote their products on the international market.

Today, coffee is one of Tanzania's main export products, and the country's coffee-growing regions include Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Mbeya, Moshi and Ruvuma. Arabica coffee is primarily grown in Tanzania, and popular varieties include Bourbon, Kent and N39. Tanzanian coffee is characterized by sweet flavor, acidity and citrus notes.
